About
A cabinet that is running is not a cabinet that is holding
Independent Sub-Zero service for built-in refrigeration on the north lakefront of Chicago. Not a franchise, not a dispatch board reselling somebody else's van — one company, one route, and a method that does not change depending on who answers the phone.
What we do not do
We do not quote over the phone. A price given before anyone has read a pressure or a resistance is a guess with a number attached to it, and the person who pays for that guess is you — either in a part that did not need replacing, or in a second visit for the fault that was actually there.
We do not replace on suspicion. If a component is condemned it is because it was measured, and the reading is written down for you. That includes the visits where the answer is that the board is fine and the problem is a duct full of ice.
And we do not tell you a cabinet is finished when it is repairable. The bands on the front page sit a long way under what a comparable built-in replacement costs, before anyone touches the joinery that was built around the old one.
How a visit runs
Model and serial first. Not for the paperwork — for the parts. A sealed-system component ordered against the wrong serial turns one visit into three, and on these cabinets the differences between model families are not cosmetic.
Then the readings, taken under load. Cabinet and evaporator temperatures at the shelf, defrost circuit tested rather than assumed, airflow read where the air actually leaves, current draw at the compressor, and gauges on the sealed system where the symptom points there. A cabinet in a warm August kitchen behaves differently at nine in the morning and at six in the evening, which is why the readings are taken while it is working, not while it is resting.
Then one number. Parts and labour together, agreed before a panel comes further off or anything is ordered. The service call comes off it in full the moment you approve the work.
Then proof. The cabinet is brought back to spec while we are still in the kitchen and the readings are shown to you rather than summarised. Old parts stay with you. Panels and cabinetry go back the way they came off.
Why the coverage area is small
Lincoln Park, the Gold Coast, Lakeview East and Streeterville sit on one route that can be driven in a morning. That is a deliberate limit, and it buys two things: the return visit with an ordered part happens inside the same week, and dispatch knows which buildings need a freight elevator booked and a certificate on file before anyone leaves the shop.
It also means we know the stock. The same three or four failures come back again and again on the cabinets in these kitchens, and knowing which ones they are is the difference between a diagnosis that takes twenty minutes and one that takes an afternoon.
